Instagram hashtag research

The problem with hashtag tools is that they hand you the biggest tags, which are the ones you have no chance of ranking for. This one sorts by size tier first, so the useful middle is visible instead of buried.

One composer for all of them. Deep analytics for Instagram and TikTok.

A big tag is not a good tag

The same search, sorted two ways.

A list sorted by size

Illustration 16/10
A long undifferentiated list of tags, all of them enormous.
  • The top of the list is the tags with millions of posts, which are the ones you will never surface in.
  • The tag you could genuinely rank for is somewhere below the fold, if it is there at all.
  • Nothing tells you whether a number was measured or guessed.
  • You copy thirty tags into the caption and hope.

Sorted into tiers

  • Five tiers from Micro to Viral, so the reachable middle is visible instead of buried.
  • A tag too big to rank for is labelled as such before you build a post around it.
  • An estimated count says it is an estimate rather than posing as a measurement.
  • What you keep goes into a list, and the list goes into the composer.

What the research actually gives you

Finding tags is half of it. The other half is knowing which ones are worth a post.

Search

By keyword or by tag, and you get neighbours either way

Type a word or an existing hashtag and get back related tags rather than only the one you asked for. Every row carries its size tier, which is the thing that decides whether a tag is worth using at your follower count.

Results you have paid for stay readable, and repeating a search inside the free window does not charge again.

Micro to Viral

Five bands by how much has been posted under a tag. The point is not the label, it is that the reachable tags stop being invisible next to the huge ones.

Lists

Saved once, used everywhere

Keep the tags worth keeping in a list, then push that list into the composer while you write the post instead of retyping it.

Per-post sentiment

A report on one tag labels the mood of individual posts rather than averaging the whole tag into a single number, because a tag is rarely one mood.

Top content

What is actually working under a tag right now, so you can see the shape of post that surfaces there before you make one.

Tracking over time

Put a tag on tracking and every run stores a snapshot. That is what turns a size into a direction, which is the part a one-off lookup can never tell you.

From a word to a caption

Three steps, and the tags never get retyped.

01
Search

Start from what you were going to write about

A keyword works as well as a hashtag. What comes back is the neighbourhood around it, sorted so the tags you could realistically surface in are the ones you see first.

02
Go deeper

Open a report on the tags worth one

A report brings back the top content under a tag and labels the sentiment of the individual posts. Media is copied to our storage as the report is built, so it still renders months later when the platform has expired its own links.

03
Use them

Straight into the post

Save the survivors into a list and push the list into the composer when you write. The research and the scheduling are the same product, so nothing is copied between two tabs.

Questions about Instagram specifically

Does hashtag research work on any other network?

No. This module is Instagram-only, and no page on this site will claim otherwise. TikTok is covered for publishing and for profile analytics instead.

Are the post counts exact?

For the larger tags they are measured. For smaller ones they are an estimate, and the interface says so where it shows one rather than dressing a guess up as a measurement.

What do the five tiers mean?

They band a tag by how much has been posted under it, from Micro through Niche, Rising and Popular to Viral. The useful part is not the label but the sorting: it stops the enormous tags from burying the ones you could actually surface in.

How is sentiment worked out?

Per post, on the posts a report actually pulled, rather than across the entire history of the tag. Individual posts keep their own label instead of being averaged into one mood for the whole tag.

Can I follow a tag over time?

Yes. Put it on tracking and each run stores a snapshot, which is what turns a size number into a direction. Without that, every check is disconnected from the last one.

Do the tags I find end up in my posts automatically?

Not automatically, but without retyping. Save them into a list and push the list into the composer while writing the caption, on this site rather than through an export.

What happens if a search finds nothing?

You are not charged for it. A search that comes back empty or errors is refunded, because paying for an empty screen is not a thing we are willing to defend.
